Studies for Terra Incognita, #1 - 34
Monotypes on 46gsm Kozo Paper
13 x 43 cm unframed
May 2020
'Studies for Terra Incognita’ take the physical form of a series
of monoprints imagining the rapidly changing horizon lines
of glacial landscapes along the Antarctic Ice Shelf.
Utilising cartographic material and early exploration
photographs (glass lantern slides) from the State Library
collection, this project aims to provide an emotive visualisation
to the monumental importance of this still largely unknown
landscape that is currently deteriorating at an unprecedented rate.
Referred to as ‘Terra Incognita Australis’ in its first speculated
existence (19th century), this project takes reference to those
early imagined landscapes, endeavouring to provide
document to the irreversibly changing coastline of a place we
have barely known.
An additional parallel to these early adventurers can be drawn
to our current day climate crisis. This project is not only a
visualisation of early record, but an imagining of what we will
lose due to human influence, be it from an exceptional distance.
These studies were produced in preperation for the creation of
'Terra Incognita’, an artist book to be made during the undertaking
of the Tate Adams Memorial Fellowship.
This project was made possible through the generous support
of the State Library of Victoria & the Baldessin Press
